Podstatné meno Meaning: Villein, or villain, was a term used in the feudal era to denote a peasant (tenant farmer) who was legally tied to a lord of the manor – a villein in gross – or in the case of a villein regardant to a manor. Villeins occupied the social space between a free peasant (or "freeman") and a slave. A villein could not leave the land without the landowner's consent.
Translation:
   Slovak - nevoľník (neskôr poddaný). Nevoľník spravidla nemohol zmeniť ani bydlisko, ani povolanie, ani iné stránky svojho života a života svojich detí. Po zrušení nevoľníctva sa stal poddaným. Používa sa aj vo význame sedliak.

   Czech - nevolník (později poddaný). Nevolnictví je označení vztahu závislosti mezi rolníkem (nevolníkem) a majitelem půdy (pán). Rolník byl nájemcem půdy a byl tak právně vázán k jejímu majiteli. Vztah zahrnoval také fyzickou závislost rolníka a jeho povinnost respektovat pánovu vůli. Po zrušení nevolnictva se stal poddaným. Používá se i ve významu sedlák.
